Red eye treefrog care:
Red eyed treefrogs utilize more vertical then
horzontal space. A twenty gallon high enclosure with a
glass top would be perfect for three adult treefrogs.
Smaller froglets can be kept in ten gallons, but once
they reach six months it will be time to move up to a
larger enclosure if more then one is being housed.
A layer of sheet moss for substrate would be
perfect for a treefrog enclosure with plenty of either
live broad leaved plants or fake plants. The key is to
make sure there are plenty of places for your frogs to
climb on at night and sleep on during the day.
Humidity is very important to these tropical
frogs. A relative humidity of eighty to ninety five
percent is needed to keep these frogs healthy. The
glass top will help with this, but it is also
recommended to spray your enclosure with distilled or
rain water atleast once a day to help keep the
humidity up.
Big water features are not neccasary in the
enclosure unless you are planning to breed your frogs.
A large water bowl can be placed under a few large
leaves during breeding to help with egglaying. The
females adhere their eggs to leaves over water so that
when they hatch the tadpoles fall into the water. If
breeding is not desired then keep just same sex pairs
or trios and only a small water bowl will do.
Feeding red eyes is not a very complicated thing.
Just remember that your frogs will only feed at night
since they are nocturnal animals. Froglets and
juevinile frogs will eat small crickets and adults
will readily take medium and near adult size crickets
with gusto.
Supplementing is important and can be done in two
ways. Putting a pinch or two of high quality reptile
vitamin/calcium powder in a plastic bag along with a
few crickets, and shaking it will coat the insects
with the powder. Then just add the crickets to the
enclosure for your frogs to enjoy. another method is
to feed your frogs a high quality cricket food which,
and then feed the frog the night after on the
gut-loaded crickets. Supplementing your frogs should
only be done two to three times weekly.
